David Dowsey, author and luxury book project manager

David Dowsey produces museum quality books to special commission that are amongst the finest in the world.

His specialty is luxury subjects written with high level subject knowledge, deep commitment and scrupulous attention to detail.

He researches, writes and project-manages the complete production of luxury books with trusted world-class photographic, design, illustration, and printing partners to ensure the highest levels of quality, accuracy and presentation.

David Dowsey’s writing CV includes exquisite published books on luxury subjects; extensive experience writing and editing magazines, websites, and noted international journals; screenwriting; speech-writing; public relations; marketing and brand building.

His published work includes the best-selling Aston Martin: Power, Beauty and Soul (which has been in continuous print since 2007, with six imprints and two special limited editions); A Le Mans Diary; Making the Cut: The Power and Passion behind a Tailoring Dynasty; Elfin: The Spirit of Speed (printed in four limited editions, including a sold out version that remains Australia’s most expensive motoring book); HSV: The Ultimate Compilation of HSV History and Elfin Type 400: The story of BB661, the first in a new series of specialised books focusing on single examples of exceptional vehicles.

His latest projects include three screenplays, Göring’s Tailor; The Restoration; and The Long Blue Line, a feature-length script bringing to life Donald Campbell’s problem-plagued 1964 Land Speed Record attempt at Lake Eyre, South Australia. Then there is the first in a series of The Tailoring Detective fictional crime novels, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and his debut play, Safe as Houses.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne, David Dowsey came from a classical music background; a subject for which he maintains a deep respect.

He has had a genuine and passionate interest in classic cars – and Aston Martin in particular – for many years after first coming into contact with the marque through the famous Corgi toys. He then became a long-term Aston Martin owner. In his stable is an Alfa Romeo GT1600 Junior.

David Dowsey’s profession as a motoring journalist has allowed him to sample some of the greatest cars from around the globe; taken him to the factories and birthplaces of Ferrari, Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar and more; and provided access to some of the most famous personalities in motoring and motorsport.

He has been a long-term devotee of artisan-made clothing and footwear, having commissioned bespoke suits and shirts tailored in London, Naples, Florence, Bergamo, Melbourne, and Sydney, and custom-made shoes built in Paris, London, Melbourne and Florence.

In 2023, David Dowsey produced the television program Cool Cars with Dermott and Elise, which aired on the 7 Network in Australia, starring Dermott Brereton and Elise Elliott.

His other interests include Art Deco architecture and design, food and wine, cooking and gardening, antiques, custom-made musical instruments, watches, aviation, sailing, perfume, jewellery and fashion.
